It's very important to know how to use language in social situations because what would be the point of learning English if you never feel comfortable speaking in public?

One of the most intimidating situations is ordering food.  A lot of students try to avoid this by just pointing to menu items and saying "this and this." It's actually not that hard.

Let me teach you just three simple phrases that will always work.

(1) I'd like to have (the/a)_______. (same as, I would like to have___.)
(2) I'd like (the/a)_________.
(3) I'll have (the/a)_________.

I've heard a lot of non-native speakers use the phrase, " I want_______. This is not incorrect and can be used, however, the phrases above definitely sound more polite. Take a few minutes today to just remember one or two of these simple ways and never be afraid to order food again!

What would you like to have from Sweet & Cake Cafe today? I'd like the fruit cereal and a black tea, please. What about you?

Hi Rita.
1. I'd like to have the Black Tea....it's correct, but native speakers usually don't put "a" in front of the tea.
2. I'd like a fruit Cereal. That isn't correct. I'd like a bowl of fruit Cereal.
3. I'll have the Orange Juice. ..I'll have an Orange Juice. Usually there is a size, like small, medium or large. What you have will be understood.
