I'M JUST CHILLIN'

3/16/2016

For the past week the weather in Seattle has been very rainy, windy, and gloomy. I know most of you will think, "but isn't Seattle known for being gloomy and rainy anyway?" Trust me, it's not always! It has, however, seemed this way for days and days now.

This kind of weather makes me want to curl up in my warm bed with my fleece socks on, a nice cup of tea in one hand and a book in another.  It makes me want to just "chill."

The word "chill" can be used to mean multiple things : to hang out (intransitive verb), to calm down (verb), someone who is very relaxed and easygoing (adjective), or sensation of coldness (noun).

When I say I want to "chill" because of the rainy windy weather I mean I just want to relax, hang out and do nothing.

This is the same meaning as the slang, chillin'

The English Student Meaning of Slang Chillin
In this cold, rainy weather, I would just be in my bed chillin'.

You can say to someone , "I'm just chillin' at home" or "I'm chillin' at my friend's place"

**If you have the energy to learn another phrase with the word "chill", the phrasal verb "chill out" is a good one. You might have heard it in movies before. It means to take it easy, calm down. For example, if you're very worried about a work presentation, your spouse may say, "You need to chill out! You'll be fine!" This means he/she is telling you to relax, calm down, don't get to excited. Everything will be OK!

Meaning of Hangry

I recently saw a post by someone that said, "Excuse my rudeness, I'm just hangry." I've never heard the word "hangry" before and at first I thought the person meant "hungry." I was wrong.

I did some research of my own and discovered that the word is a humorous slang (informal) used to describe anger caused by being hungry. The word was created by blending the words "hungry" and "angry" together. It makes sense, as when we're hungry, it becomes hard to focus and we become short-tempered and irritated. How interesting and useful as I've definitely been hangry before. What about you?

So happy to have discovered a new and trending word while being able to share it with you all!

The term "selfie" or "selfies" is a fairly new internet slang known as a picture taken by yourself with a camera phone or a digital camera. It's usually uploaded to a social media site, such as Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter.

Selfie (plural: selfies) is a noun. These days you'll probably hear a lot of people say, "Let's take a selfie!"

Why do people take selfies? To show off? Get attention? Because it's fun and camera phones are so easy to use? We all have our reasons but it's definitely a phenomenon, so it's an important word to know!

Here is a funny read on eight types of selfies you should never take!!

The English Student, English Student, The English Student blog, ESL blog, ESL website, fun ESL sites, bucket list, what's a bucket list, what's on your bucket list, ESL slang, things to do before you die,
A "bucket list" is a list of all the things in life you want to achieve, experience, or fulfill before you die (goals, dreams, or experiences).

It comes from the term "kick the bucket" which means "to die." So a "bucket list" is a list of things to do before you die.

Having a "bucket list" helps you create more meaning to your life.
Last year I finally achieved one thing off my bucket list, which was to start a blog!

Do you have your own list? If not, why don't you make one so you could create more purpose in your life and let go of your fears!

Here are some questions you can start thinking about:

(1) If I died tomorrow, what are some things I wish I could do before?
(2) Is there anything new I want to try out?
(3) What do I want to do to create more meaning in my life?
(4) What places do I want to visit?
(5) What type of person do I want to become and how will I get there?

Please share, what is one thing on your "bucket list"?

Before I started this blog, I worked with a friend on a learning website. During this time, I created many English materials. I wanted to share with you a popular one on Four Common Slang.

Slang is very informal use of words and phrases. It is more common in speaking than in writing. For example, have you ever thought something was too expensive? You might say, “This cup of coffee is $8?! That’s a rip-off! ” We use the slang "rip-off” when we think something is too overpriced.

Slang is important in order to understand people better. Some slang may be offensive, you want to make sure you know what is appropriate and what is inappropriate to use!
