I've had a busy few months doing some traveling, visiting family and focusing on other areas of The English Student for the next year. I'm very excited to have new products and downloads soon. I know so many of you have been waiting patiently for something new, so thank you all for sticking around as I get myself settled!

Speaking of traveling, the holiday is one of the most popular travel times. A lot of people take this time to visit family and friends or go on vacation. I thought this would be a great opportunity to talk about some phrasal verbs related to travels, especially if you'll be going away somewhere. If you need a review, a phrasal verb is a verb + a preposition. Phrasal verbs are really important in the English language because a single verb could change meaning when a preposition is added to it.

If you haven't already met Mr and Mrs Robinson on The English Student Instagram page, here they are! Obviously ready to get away. Take a look at their travel story below.

The journey of Mr and Mrs Robinson's travel involves seven phrasal verbs:

For many months, Mr and Mrs Robinson have wanted to get away.
Get away - Leave for a trip

After deciding they're going to take a trip to the city of Marseille, they pack up everything they'll need: sweaters, jackets, hats, shoes, camera, toiletries.
Pack up - To get everything you'll need and put them in a bag or suitcase

They get to the airport on time and the plane takes off.
Take off - When a plan leaves a destination and flies off

They land at the airport in Marseille and wait for a cab to pick them up and drop them off at the Hotel Petite.
Pick up - Get someone from a location to take them somewhere else
Drop off - Take a person to a place and leave them there

When they arrive at the hotel, the bell boy takes their luggage and guides them to the entrance of the hotel where they are required to check in. After spending five days in Marseille, Mr and Mrs Robinson are happy and rejuvenated, ready to head back home. They check out of the hotel.
Check in - Show your ID and register at a hotel to get a room and key
Check out - Let the hotel know you are ending the stay and leaving

I hope Mr and Mrs Robinson had a great trip and I hope you've found this diagram of travel phrasal verbs to be somewhat helpful, especially if you'll be traveling in the next few weeks!

Are you going somewhere during the holidays? Please share with us your travel story!

As usual, please use common sense when sharing my images. As we got to the top of the mountain I was suddenly overwhelmed by this fear of falling off the mountain. I could not look down and my legs suddenly felt very weak. I quickly took a few pictures and ran back to the car. I've never been afraid of heights, so this was pretty strange to me. A few days later, I was in an elevator alone and all of a sudden it stopped on the 14th floor. All the lights started flickering for a few seconds and would not move! I tried pressing every single button and it would not respond. My cell phone also had no signal in the elevator. You can imagine that after my experience on the mountain, this really made me panic as all I could think about was the elevator falling all the way down! Luckily, after a few minutes, it started working again. I walked out, breathed a sigh of relief and vowed to never take an elevator again. But of course, this would not be possible as I I need to use the elevator to get home every day.

Someone who is afraid of heights is known as having acrophobia (pronounced as: ak-ruh-FO-bee-uh). For some who suffer from extreme acrophobia, it could cause shortness of breath, panic attacks, rapid breathing, nausea, vomiting, sweating, dizziness. It's definitely not a pleasant condition to have. They also avoid any activity that involves heights such as, flying, going on a Ferris wheel, skydiving, using an elevator, or even something simple like climbing a ladder.

Let's break down the word.

Acro- is a prefix (added to the beginning of a word) from the Greek term "acron" meaning height or high point . You may know "-phobia" as a common suffix (added to the end of a word) meaning fear. It's from the Greek work "phobos." There are lots of words in the English language ending with "-phobia" depending what your fear is. For example, the word "clinophobia" is a fear of going to bed. There's basically a phobia for everything you can think of.

Tomorrow I'll present a few more interesting phobias and words with this suffix, so don't forget to check back!

Do you have a phobia of any kind?

Oh! Jerry could sense something was going on and says, "so that's your poker face?" George says, "no, that's my regular face!" It is, as I mentioned above, "expressionless." If you're familiar with poker, you'll know that it's very important as a good poker player to maintain a blank expression so that you won't reveal too much to your opponents.

You may have also heard of poker face from Lady Gaga. One of her hit songs is called .......Poker Face! Part of the lyric is, "He can't read my poker face.....p p p poker face.....p p p poker face." I won't elaborate on the meaning of the song but she is basically hiding her true feelings and concealing her true emotions. She has a p..p..p..poker face! Also Lady Gaga was extremely hard to draw, but I hope you get the point!

My husband is extremely good at telling jokes or a funny story with a poker face. Me? Not so much! I start laughing even before I utter a word. Then everyone just starts laughing at me for laughing!
