Present Continuous Tense

The present continuous tense (also called present progressive) is considered one of the most frequently used tenses in English, but it also commonly confused by ESL students. This tense is formed using:
The verb BE in the present tense (am, is, are, was, were) +  verb -ING

There are some different situations we use present continuous tense.

(1) Activities happening right now!
What's going on at the moment you are speaking? These activities have begun but not finished yet.

"I am teaching you English right now."
"My brother is watching T.V."

(2) Activities that are in progress
but are temporary
What's going on around this present time?

"I am studying English so I can
be a flight attendant."
"My brother is reading the book, Harry Potter"

(3) Activities that will or will not happen in the near future
What is arranged or planned for the future?

"He is moving to a new apartment this weekend"
"I am visiting my grandparents tomorrow"

(4) Activities that happen again and again

"It's always raining in Seattle"
"Lee is always complaining"
**we add the word 'always'
before the verb in these situations

Take a look at the image below, which situation is it? Number 1, 2, 3 or 4?

Did you know that the most popular language on the internet is English? The second is Chinese. Do you know some of the popular Internet slang below? Some of them were new to me. I guess I'm falling behind!

It's so hard to keep up-to-date on Internet slang because it's constantly growing! But fortunately, it's easy to learn them if you just do a Google search for popular Internet slang.

Is there anything you use frequently?

Have you ever heard that music helps with learning? Believe me, it works! Singing is not only fun, but you could learn so much (without even realizing you're learning!). I love to use music in my teaching because not only has there been a lot of scientific research into the benefits to language learning but I have seen the benefits with my own students.

Take a look at some reasons why you should start singing!

Do you think this Is too good to be true? Try and sing this song below!
Can you share some English songs that have helped you learn the language?

Do You Have The Worst Job in The World?

11/1/2013

worst job, worse vs. worst, what's the difference between worse and worst, worst and worse, commonly mistaken words, commonly miused words, worst job in the world,
I'm sure you've sometimes thought you have the worst job (or the worst boss in the world)! But your job might not be that bad compared to another person's job. Just remember someone has a job worse than yours!

What's the difference between worse and worst?

Worse  \ˈwərs\
Meaning: bad to a higher degree than something else
A comparative adjective
Use to compare two things
(We usually use it with the word "than" to compare to something else)

For example:
"My job is worse than your job"
"His car is worse than mine"
"Their dog is worse than ours"
"Today's exam was worse than last week's exam. I couldn't finish it!"

Remember, when we compare two things, one will ALWAYS be "worse,"  never "worst"

Worst \ˈwərst\
Meaning: bad to the highest degree
A superlative adjective
Use to compare more than two things. If something is "worst", it's the most unpleasant or most unsatisfactory compared to a lot of things. It's the worst!

For example:
"I have the worst job! My boss keeps giving me more work!"
"His car is the worst! It always breaks down."
"Their dog is the worst! He bites everyone!"
"Today's exam was the worst! I couldn't finish it!"

Think of it like the word, 'best.' When something is the best, nothing can be better than that. So, if something is the worst, nothing is worse than it!

Try comparing the examples above for "worse" and "worst." Do you see a difference?

Ready to try these questions?

(1) That was the worse/worst breakfast I have ever had in my life!!
(2) I hate vegetables. Broccoli is the worse/worst!
(3) The weather in Seattle is worse/worst than the weather in New York.
(4) Who told you my grades are worse/worst than yours?!
(5) I have the worse/worst teacher! She never comes to class on time!
(6) I have always thought I had the worse/worst job in the world, but I think your job is worse/worst than mine.
